My Favourite Songs of 2013 - #21-30
On a roll now! We are getting pretty deep into my Favourite 50 Songs of 2013 and I'm feeling reaaaaal good. Hope you are all enjoying yourselves.
30. Ivan & Alyosha - Running For Cover
Finally got my hands on some music from this Seattle-based group. This was one of those songs that originally made the short list, then it moved into 50th spot, then 40th, then 30th. If there were 13 months in 2013 then this could have very well made it into the Big Dance!
29. Pickwick - Lady Luck (feat Sharon van Etten)
Sticking with the Seattle theme...for anyone who has been reading the Meatysauce over the past couple of years will know of my everlasting love for Pickwick. I missed their show in Vancouver this past year and I am still rattled. Please come back! For the rest of you, go and buy their album 'Can't Talk Medicine'. It's a banger.
28. Mozes and the Firstborn - I Got Skills
Press play and pretend you are sitting in a dive bar in a small ski town. Something just feels right. There is this jangly, laid-back and boozey feel to this track that pretty much sums up my life from 1998 through until 2006.
27. Toro y Moi - Campo
Talk about an artist that is constantly changing his sound up. On 'Campo', Chaz Bundick is certainly bringing back the smooth n' soulful vibe of some earlier work. This song is so good.
26. Fort Frances - How to Turn Back (Halfway House session)
I'll have to give a shout out to one of my favourite music sites Music vs Misery for introducing me to this track on her October Mix this past year. I don't know if it was just the right song for the moment but something about Fort Frances just stood out and I can't seem to shake it.
25. Junip - Your Life Your Call
Oh man, what a year for José González (who you may or may not hear again later on down the list)! When teamed up with Tobias Winterkorn, they pump out some pretty amazing tunes as Junip. Have a listen and you'll see why this song is showing up on a lot of other 'Best Of' lists.
24. Phantogram - Black Out Days
Even though this song won't officially be released until February of 2014, it is still good enough to make it onto this years list. I can't remember a time that I was this excited for an album release. Is it just me or does Barsuk know what they are doing?
23. Hey Marseilles - Heart Beats
Again with the Seattle theme, this particular song from Hey Marseilles has me hooked from the first drum beat. It carries this song over some dreamy strings and vivid lyrics. It's a great tune…plain and simple.
22. The Belle Game - River
Bringing it back to Vancouver, BC with this one! Yeah! It was a gigantic year for The Belle Game. A new record, a couple of tours, some nice accolades, and most importantly…the 22nd spot on my Favourite Songs of 2013 with this beauty. Well done guys and gals. Come by for pizza any time and it's on me!
21. Chvrches - Recover
It wasn't surprising to see this track at the top of a few 'Best Of' lists this past year. Lots of talent all round on this Scottish trios latest album. Just a little throwback poll…how good was The Mother We Share? So good.
